10 Packing Hacks That Will Save You Time, Space, and Sanity

 In Packing Hacks

Packing is the part of moving that most people dread — and for good reason. Done poorly, it leads to broken items, chaotic unpacking, and boxes that somehow never seem to end. Done well, it feels almost satisfying.

After helping thousands of Twin Cities families move, the team at 1st Class Moving has seen what works and what doesn’t. Here are 10 packing hacks that will genuinely make your move easier.

1. Use Clothes as Padding

Socks, t-shirts, and sweaters make excellent wrapping material for fragile items. Wrap glasses in socks, pad breakable items with sweaters, and stuff hollow items (vases, pots) with clothing. You save on bubble wrap and maximize box space.

2. Color-Code Your Boxes

Buy a set of colored tape or colored dot stickers. Assign one color per room. Then put matching colored tape on the doorframe of each room at your new home. Movers (and you) will know exactly where each box goes without reading a single label.

3. Take a Photo Before You Unplug Electronics

Before disconnecting your TV, gaming setup, home office, or stereo system, snap a photo of the cable setup. You’ll thank yourself when you’re trying to reassemble everything in your new living room at 9 PM.

4. Pack an “Open First” Box

Load the last box onto the truck — so it’s the first one off. Fill it with: toilet paper, paper towels, soap, phone chargers, a change of clothes, coffee supplies, and any medications. This box keeps you functional while everything else gets sorted.

5. Don’t Overfill Boxes

It’s tempting to stuff boxes as full as possible — but heavy, overfull boxes are a back injury waiting to happen. Keep boxes under 50 lbs. Books, dishes, and other heavy items should go in small boxes; large boxes are for light items like linens and pillows.

6. Use Garbage Bags for Hanging Clothes

Leave clothes on the hanger, gather a group of 10–15, tie the hangers together, and pull a large trash bag up from the bottom. Twist-tie it closed at the top. You’ve got a garment bag that takes 30 seconds to make — and just as long to unpack.

7. Pack Dishes Vertically

Plates are much less likely to crack when packed on their edge (like records in a crate) rather than stacked flat. Use dish dividers or separate each plate with packing paper.

8. Label EVERY Side of the Box

Boxes get stacked, turned sideways, and shuffled around. Labeling the top isn’t enough — label all four sides and the top so you can read it no matter how it’s oriented in the moving truck.

9. Use Ziploc Bags for Hardware

When disassembling furniture, put all screws, bolts, and small parts in a labeled Ziploc bag. Tape that bag to the underside of the furniture piece it belongs to. No more mysterious hardware bags at the end of the move.

10. Hire Professionals for the Big Stuff

For heavy furniture, fragile antiques, specialty items, and anything that makes you nervous — leave it to the pros. 1st Class Moving handles your most challenging pieces with care and the right equipment every time.
