Last-Day Packing Hacks: What to Do When You’re Moving Today

 In Packing Hacks

It’s moving day (or almost moving day), and there’s still more to pack than you expected. Don’t panic — this happens to almost everyone. Here are the best last-minute packing hacks to help you get everything loaded quickly without descending into chaos.

Grab What You Can — Trash Bags Are Your Friend

Clothing, linens, pillows, and stuffed animals don’t need boxes. Large garbage bags work perfectly and are faster than any other packing method. Label them with masking tape and a marker so you know what’s inside. They’re flexible, fill awkward truck spaces efficiently, and you were going to throw them away anyway.

Basket and Bin Method

Laundry baskets, hampers, bins, and totes are open containers ready to receive loose items fast. Don’t waste time finding boxes — just fill containers you already have and let the movers carry them. Cover with a towel or sheet if you want to keep things contained.

Triage First, Pack Second

If you’re truly overwhelmed, stop and triage for 10 minutes before packing. Sort what’s left into: needs to move today, can be donated/left behind, and trash. Donating items to a neighbor, leaving unwanted things at the curb (with a “FREE” sign), or scheduling a same-day junk pickup can dramatically reduce what you need to pack.

The Dump Box (For the Last 15 Minutes)

Every move ends with a “dump box” — a box or bin where the last miscellaneous items get thrown in quickly. Label it “Open Last — Misc” and put it in the truck last so it comes off first. Don’t waste time sorting it now; sort it at the destination.

Don’t Leave Without Doing a Walkthrough

Before the truck pulls away, walk every room, open every closet, check every shelf, and look under every bed. Open the oven, check under the bathroom sink, and look on top of closet shelves. The items you forget are always the ones you need first.

Essentials Bag: Your Moving Day Survival Kit

Before the chaos hits, set aside a bag with phone chargers, medications, important documents, a change of clothes, toiletries, and snacks. This bag goes with you in the car — not in the truck. When moving day is done, you’ll have everything you need for the first night in your new home.

First Things at the New Place

When you arrive, unload the bedroom first so you have somewhere to sleep tonight. Kitchen next — a functional kitchen makes the first night feel like home. Everything else can wait for tomorrow.
