10 Packing Hacks That Will Save Your Sanity on Moving Day

 In Packing Hacks

Packing is the part of moving that most people dread the most — and for good reason. Do it wrong and you’ll spend weeks after your move searching for things that should have been easy to find. Do it right and unpacking becomes almost enjoyable. Here are 10 packing hacks that actually work.

1. Pack Room by Room, Not Category by Category

It’s tempting to pack all the books together or all the kitchen items together, but packing by room makes unpacking so much faster. Label every box with both the room it belongs in and a brief description of contents.

2. Use Your Clothes as Packing Material

T-shirts, sweaters, and socks make excellent padding for fragile items. Wrap glasses in socks, cushion breakables with folded shirts. You save packing paper and space at the same time.

3. Take Photos Before Disassembling Electronics

Snap a photo of the back of your TV, your cable box setup, your PC tower — before you unplug everything. When you’re setting it all up in your new Minneapolis home, you’ll have a reference instead of a puzzle.

4. Color-Code Your Boxes

Grab a set of colored markers or colored tape. Assign each room a color: blue for bedroom, red for kitchen, yellow for bathroom. When the movers are unloading, they can sort boxes at a glance without reading every label.

5. Pack Heavy Items in Small Boxes

Books, tools, and canned goods go in small boxes. Pillows, linens, and light items go in large boxes. This seems obvious, but it’s easy to forget in the chaos of packing. A small box of books is manageable; a large box of books is a back injury waiting to happen.

6. Seal Liquid Containers with Plastic Wrap

Before packing shampoo, cooking oil, or cleaning supplies, remove the cap, place plastic wrap over the opening, then replace the cap. This prevents messy leaks that can ruin everything else in the box.

7. Don’t Empty Drawers — Wrap Them

For dressers with light items (clothes, linens), remove the drawer, wrap it in stretch wrap or plastic, and carry it as-is. Many items don’t need to be unpacked at all.

8. Use Wardrobe Boxes for Hanging Clothes

Wardrobe boxes let hanging clothes move still on the hanger, making unpacking your closet a five-minute job. Ask your moving company if they supply them.

9. Pack an “Open First” Box

Pack one box with everything you’ll need for your first night: phone charger, toiletries, a change of clothes, bedding essentials, coffee maker. Label it clearly and load it last so it comes off the truck first.

10. Start Earlier Than You Think You Need To

Most people underestimate packing time by at least 50%. If you think you’ll need two days, give yourself four.
