The 9 Stages of Moving, as Experienced by Every Minneapolis Family

 In Funny / Relatable

If you’ve ever moved in the Minneapolis metro — or anywhere, really — you know that there’s a very specific emotional journey involved. It starts with optimism and ends somewhere between exhausted relief and “never again.” Let’s walk through it together.

Stage 1: Excited Optimism

“This is going to be so organized. I’m going to color-code everything. I’ll donate half my stuff and only move what I truly love.” You’ve already googled “minimalist packing system.” You feel like a new person.

Stage 2: The Realization

You open the first closet and realize you have somehow accumulated 47 reusable grocery bags, a broken treadmill, and seven sets of sheets for a bed size you no longer own. The optimism dims slightly.

Stage 3: Panic Packing

There are three days left and nothing is packed. Everything goes in boxes. Order is irrelevant now. A serving spoon has been packed with a biography of Abraham Lincoln and a Christmas ornament. This is fine.

Stage 4: The Box Avalanche

Your living room is now 80% boxes. You have to turn sideways to get to the couch. You’ve lost the remote, your car keys, and one shoe. You are living in a box fortress and you built it yourself.

Stage 5: Moving Day Madness

The truck is here. Suddenly everything needs to happen at once. There’s always that one rogue piece of furniture that won’t fit through a doorway no matter which angle you try. (It got in there somehow. The laws of physics are simply different now.)

Stage 6: The Drive

You’re in your car, following the moving truck down I-35 in July heat, eating gas station snacks, wondering if you remembered to turn off the stove at the old place. You probably did. Probably.

Stage 7: Unload Euphoria

The new place! It’s so empty and full of possibility! Everything is going in the right rooms! This is going great!

Stage 8: The Box Graveyard

Three weeks later, 12 boxes are still unpacked in the basement. They will be there for two years. You have accepted this.

Stage 9: “We Should Do This More Often”

You’ve forgotten the chaos. The new place feels like home. You’re already browsing Zillow. Totally normal.
